MIDLAND, MICH. (Oct. 22, 11:20 p.m. ET) -- Dow Corning Corp. and Wacker Chemie AG have started construction of the second phase of their pyrogenic silica plant in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province.

The plant is part of a China's largest integrated silicone manufacturing site, and together with a siloxane factory, the total complex will have a nameplate capacity of 210,000 metric tonnes, the companies said in an Oct. 22 statement.

The site, in the Jiangsu River Chemical Industrial Park, covers about 1 million square meters and is one of the largest silicone manufacturing sites in the world, the firms said.

"The new investment will allow us to better serve our customers’ needs, and to drive the development of the silicone industry in China," said Udo Horns, project director for Munich, Germany-based Wacker.

The companies described the investment as a "mid double-digit million Euro" figure, and said it would produce for industries such as construction, beauty and personal care, power and automotive.

Both companies also own manufacturing plants for silicone products at the Zhangjiagang site, and have separate marketing and sales staff. Dow Corning, based in Midland, Mich., is a joint venture of Dow Chemical Corp. and Corning Inc.
